How Meditation Skyrocketed My Sales Performance (And Can For You Too)
Before I pivoted my business into empowerment coaching…
I was working a 9-5 as an account manager in sales for a large gym chain. I wasn’t bad at my job - I was good, but I could never quite get to the top of the list, I was always around the middle rank amongst my co-workers.
I felt like outside of my job, I was pretty put together, I was hustling, I had integrity and I valued my work ethic, and yet, I felt like there was something that was slightly off or missing from my entire approach to my job.
This was before I had really worked on my mindset by reading books and shifting my outlook on money, and just how much control I had in my life.
On January 1, 2020, I made a pact with myself to meditate every single morning. I knew I would have to start slow but I made it a point to wake up at 5am every morning to journal, read, and meditate. I had struggled with meditation before, so I knew that my approach with meditation had to be very intentional and with the long-term in mind.
I started with short, guided meditations. Just 3 minutes a day for about two weeks, and then it was 5 minutes, and then it was 10 minutes completely unguided. By the time January ended, I was #1 in sales. I crushed it at work. February too.
So what changed?
You could call it many things - mindset shift, becoming more intentional, being more at peace.
To be honest, I think it was actually all of those things with a greater emphasis on a healthier mindset and finding an inner calm. The calm carried me throughout the day. I’m very Type A, super high strung, and sometimes easily triggered. But meditation made me feel so calm and able to handle everything with a much clearer head. I felt more optimistic and positive of the change I could make in my life - including sales.
I saw waking up at 5am and journaling, reading and meditating as self care - taking the time to really “water” myself to prepare for the day. Journaling allowed me to brain dump anything that was on my mind giving me a fresh start, reading brought my mind to a higher level with education (I wasn’t really reading fiction books, books like “How to Win Friends & Influence People” which, 10/10 recommend, check it out at the shop on my site!).
And meditation? Even though it was guided, I approached each meditation as a way to have a conversation with the Universe and “get my mind right” before I went into work. During the guided meditations, I really focused on setting the intentions, and having as empty of a mind as possible to feel “peaceful” before going about my hectic day.
When I began doing unguided meditations, it became a time when I could have conversations with the Universe - show gratitude, affirm things I was struggling with and was trying to transform in my life, and focus on manifesting (yes, including big paychecks). I asked for guidance if I had a question, I asked for guidance to stay calm. And not every day was perfect - but I showed up every day, and I left nearly every meditation with a clear mind, allowing me to approach the many situations that came up throughout the day with ease and clarity.
Not to mention, I didn’t go about my sales with a feeling of desperation - I felt more calm and present in the moment. On top of that, my outlook on sales changed too. When you’re in sales, it’s easy to get caught up in the idea of “Well that is out of my control” when in reality, you are in full control. Sure, there are circumstances that are out of control (like when the gym closes due to COVID-19), but for the most part, taking radical responsibility (taught and realized through meditation) my entire approach to my job felt different. I felt more at ease. On the bad days, we’d say “Mama said there’d be days like this” and on all the other days, I would remind myself “Of course someone is going to join with me today” (we were 100% commission). I stopped blaming “circumstances,” controlled the controllables, did my best, and let everything else go. A complete 180 shift in mindset.
Even my manager asked me what I was doing differently, and all I said was that I was waking up at 5 in the morning, journaling, reading, and meditating, which put me in a good mindset, ready to take on the day.
So, can meditation help you in your job? Abso-freaking-lutely.
Meditation doesn’t just help with sales either, when you begin taking radical responsibility for your life you’ll find how much more you can accomplish, and when you relinquish control of that which is not in your control, you’ll approach your life with much more ease, clarity, and peace.
